Painting And Drawing

Tell us about you and how you would you describe your "art"?
Painting And Drawing.

Where are you based?
- Based along Tsholofelo park road (Open space beside the road) in Broadhurst area Gaborone.
-Gaborone West Phase 2 plot 18384.

How long have you been painting and how did you get started?
I have been painting and drawing for about 30 years in intervals and 8 years as a fulltime painter.

I started as a boy molding cattle and other things out of clay soil and advanced to using pieces of wire to make toys mostly cars. As time went on i realised that i liked drawing and any subjects in school which involved drawing were my favorite. We didn't have art and design as a subject by then. I later bought some water paints and copied pictures from books newspapers etc.

Do you come from an artistic background?
I do not come from an artistic background this is just something which happened to be my passion. It's something like a hobby to me.

What inspires you? What are your influences (Who or What)?
Im inspired by my surroundings, cultural identity of Botswana, my country and whatever happens around our lives.

What is your most proud accomplishment so far?
So far the accomplishments are:

-Representing Botswana artists (visual) in the United States of America Ohio Middletown International Fair
-Solo exhibition in the USA, Thapong Visual Arts in botswana, Gaborone and The Healing Art in Gaborone.
-Visit by the president of Botswana Sir Sertse Khama Ian Khama at my display area.
-Radio interview by local radio station RB2 in 2013.
-Television interview by eTV Botswana
-Newspaper articles by local newspapers (The Midweek Sun, The Guardian, The Weekly Post, Sunday Standard, The Botswana Daily News, The Echo, The Journal [USA]).

What are your tools for creating?
My tools for creating my works are mostly canvas, oil paint, acrylic paints, pencil and a scratchpad.

What sets you apart from the others?
Something unique about my work is that as a painter i produce different kinds of art i.e. landscapes, still life, abstracts, etc, i do not specialize in any kind of art say landscapes only.

Where are you trying to end up? (5 year plan?)
I'm trying to get to a point where i can advertise locally and internationally and be identified as one of the best artists in Botswana if not the world and also to open a gallery of my own.

What are your favourite things in life so far?
Favourite things in life so far are to explore and come up with new techniques in my painting career. Painting is my hobby and most favoured in my life regardless of collectors and sales.

If we gave you P1M what would you do with it?
Obviously if you give me a million pula i would immediately setup a gallery and advertise it largely to the world.

Any advice for people trying to do what you do?
My advice to those who want to follow my steps is that for you to be an artist, first have your love for art as if you crave for it and with that love for it u will grow to a point that you still want and will achieve new ideas and techniques and your works will be appreciated by art lovers everywhere.

Where can people buy/get a hold of your work?
My works can be viewed and bought by my display area in Broadhurst along Tsholofelo Park road and Kgalagadi brewery Metros road or Gaborone West phase 2.

How can people get in touch with you?
You can get in touch with me by email at mchristopher@rocketmail.com or phone 71392624.

Any thanks or shout outs?
A vote of thanks to all customers who have supported me by buying some of my works and the government (arts and culture) for giving me my opportunity to showcase my works abroad.
