Khwezi

I grew up listening and observing a lot of western culture as that was what I was exposed to growing up . My influence when I write and paint is mostly from the American artists I aspired to either rap or paint like, but I have become a more established artist in Botswana I could say I am trying to find my 'own' style and fuse it with what inspired me growing up.

Tell us about you and how you would you describe your "art"?

My influence when I write and paint is mostly from the American artists I aspired to either rap or paint like, but I have become a more established artist in Botswana I could say I am trying to find my 'own' style and fuse it with what inspired me growing up.

Where are you based?
Im based in Gaborone, Botswana.

How long have you been making "art" and how did you get started?
I started with tracing the cartoon characters I used to watch and read, from the Garfield comics to The Lion King characters, this was back in 1994, and never looked back since. So I actually started drawing way before I learnt how to construct a meaningful Poem. I wrote poems in my high-school years circa 1998 to 2002 and that all evolved to scripting lyrics for songs after.

Do you come from an artistic background?
The funny thing is no one in my family is artistic per se, but my Grandfather wrote some books which is where I think I inherited the scripting gene.

What inspires you? What are your influences (Who or What)?
Im inspired by everyday life, the simple things. I cant really put my finger on it but its the simple pleasures of life that im inspired by.

What is your most proud accomplishment so far?
My greatest achievement to date is the Arts For Change initiative which is a non-profit initiative I got going in conjunction with the Alliance Francaise of Gaborone and other private stakeholders from abroad & locally.

What are your tools for creating?
I use a pen to write, pencil/pen/fine-liner/marker to draw and spray-paint & airbrush to paint my masterpieces.

What sets you apart from the others?
I dont know, maybe that my name is not Setswana? I really dont know, you tell me hommie.

Where are you trying to end up? (5 year plan?)
I dont really have a place to end up at. I live my life day to day, week to week, month to month and year to year. My growth is an unending journey, I learn everyday so for me to assume I'd be somewhere and feel ultimately content with my achievements will be at a time I would have grown wise enough to know that things dont always happen like you hope they would turn out. Im alive and well, that should be enough to keep me going.

What are your favorite things in life so far?
My family and everything that keeps me crazy-insane...my good buddy's, colleagues, Facebook, music, Twitter, painting... so many more things that I couldn't put into words right now.

If we gave you P1M what would you do with it?
Build a house.

Any advice for people trying to do what you do?
Dont fake the funk.

Where can people buy/get a hold of your work?
I have a Facebook & Twitter account with links to my Reverbnation page where most of my music is but otherwise I post a lot of my pieces on my Facebook page for the moment while I decide on my website's image and content. Catch me on Facebook @ Khwezi Mphatlalatsan' or Khwezi & Arts for Change page & @Khwezi03 on Twitter or e-mail khwezi03@yahoomail.co.uk

How can people get in touch with you?
See the above.

Any thanks or shout outs?
Every one that makes my life worth living right now. They know who they are.
